Redwood National and State Parks
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Cal Barrel Road, Redwood Creek Trail, Bald Hills Road, Tall Trees Grove, Trinidad State Beach. Note the COMPLETE lack of other tourists in all of these photo galleries. I planned my trip for this time of year to avoid the crush that inundates this area in the summer and early fall of each season. Believe me, this was the time of year to go if you dislike crowds of tourists (I do!).
DAY 5
April 26, 2006
DAYS 1-2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 DAYS 6-7 DAYS 7-8
This is actually two huge Coastal Redwoods growing out of a single base, so it looks larger than it really is.
Looking down the Cal Barrel Road at my Ford Escape SUV, which already looks small...
A memorial bench set up further up the Cal Barrel Road near the trailhead I was taking.
Some serious branch debris from a recent wind storm obscured a large section of the trail
This big son-of-a-gun fell right over the trail last winter, making it hard to tell which way the trail went.
I climbed up on top and saw the other side of the trail in the distant grove.
There were Banana Slugs about every twenty feet along the trail, so I had to watch my step and not always be looking up at the trees. This sucker was nearly 10 inches long when all stretched out.
A Rotary Club of California Stone Marker dedicating a grove of large trees out in the middle of the forest.
Beach flowers
Eureka, California in the Old Town area. Nothing that impressive, but this proves that I actually drove there (basically just for cell phone service).
Trinidad State Beach
Someone was bored on the beach and built this little monument.
Note the wind-blown trees on the shore
Quite a mineral-rich sand on this beach
Not so much a bored beachgoer monument as much as a temporary shelter for camping
Bald Hills Road, driving up into the fog.
This was on the permit-only area forestry road. They gave me the daily combination to the lock on the gate to this 8-mile road.
Descending down the shortcut 1.5-mile trail to the Tall Trees Grove.
A freshly cut log that fell across the trail. It was only about 3 feet in diameter, but still large by any standard.
Down in the Tall Trees Grove Loop Trail.
These are some of the biggest trees in the world down here, exceeding 360 feet in height.
This was my "remote office" in the Elk Prairie Campground bathroom. It was the only place I could find that had an electrical outlet.
