FIM Trials 2005 World Outdoor Championship
Spirit Mountain - Duluth, MN
Day 1 Photos (See Day 2 Photos Here)
Overnight rain in Duluth made the sections very slippery and raised water levels in the streams which forced the organizers to simplify 12 of the 15 sections prior to the start this morning. In a repeat of the first day at Duluth last year, the weather further deteriorated through the day with heavy rain further raising water levels and fog seriously reducing visibility. It made for some tough photography conditions, but I got these photos before the fog reduced visibility to less than 100 feet. The basic strategy in these events is to complete a section of marked-off course boundaries in the shortest period of time, without making a mistake and putting a boot down, which penalizes your time.
June 4, 2005

A young spectator with his dad in a pretty nice rig for the weather conditions.
Section five showing the crowd of spectators. Some nice air before the steep drop. The rock was super slippery from the rain!
Check out the gap on this gorge crossing. It was about 8 feet deep, too. Pretty crazy.
Takahisa Fujinami, the current world champion, inspects the course.
Takahisa Fujinami, finishing section 7. Yes, I was very much too close to the action here.
Fujinami ended up in second place behind Dougie Lampkin.
