Independence Day Firing Session
It started out overcast, but got
consistently clear and hot, and a 25-mph variable headwind
prevented us from doing any good accuracy work with the
new rifles that weren't zeroed yet, but kick ass practice
at learning to dope the wind on the ones that were. The wind
typically shredded our long-range targets before we had finished firing shot
strings. I had one at 300 yards that tore on one side and
was flapping in the wind, and I practiced offhand standing
shots with my AR-15 to time shots when the target flapped
just so to accept a bullet for score. We had two M1
Garands, my new 1903A3 Springfield, a brand new
Springfield M1A, and my AR-15 National Match. We also had a fine
assortment of military pistols, including a Russian .380 Auto
officers model than unfortunately isn't pictured. We also
fired my S&W 629 .44 Magnum with some incredibly hot
handloads that I made, in which the cartridges had to be
pounded out of the cylinder after firing, but still under
max pressure loads, especially for that handgun. Editor's
Note: sorry I didn't take any photos of the rifle
shooting, but we traded off firing and the other guy
calling shots on the spotting
scope. |
